Discovery of a reactive azeotrope

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to identify a boiling state of constant composition and temperature in a mixture of isopropanol, water, acetic acid and isopropyl acetate that is in both reaction and phase equilibrium at the same time. This research confirms the predictions of a model based on classical thermodynamics and offers a basis for forecasting the behaviour of other mixtures. It is suggested that reactive azeotropes are common and for some systems can influence the optimal choice of process technology.

Gertrude Bell Elion (1918-99): Pioneer of drug discovery

Article Abstract:

Trudy Elion was a pioneer of rational drug design. She earned a bachelor's degree from Hunter College in 1937, and a master's in chemistry from New York University in 1941. She began her career at Burroughs Wellcome working with George Hitchings on comparing normal human cells with cancer cells, bacteria, viruses and protozoa. She held the post of head of the Department of Experimental Therapy, which she herself established, and was scientists emeritus at Glaxo Wellcome in North Carolina.

Discovery of hardest known oxide

Article Abstract:

Microhardness measurements show that a polycrystalline stishovite, a high-pressure phase of silica, is the hardest known oxide. Tests indicated that stishovite boasts a hardness in the 17-20.8 GPa range, higher than that of alumina and boron oxides. It is suggested that stishovite is part of a family of superhard high-pressure phases of high valence cation oxides with high bulk moduli.
