Dissociable neural mechanisms supporting visual short-term memory for objects

Article Abstract:

Four experiments are reported using functional magnetic resonance imaging to test the hypothesis that visual short-term memory (VSTM) capacity is limited to a fixed number of objects or whether it is variable. The experiments conducted by dissociating the representation capacities of the parietal and occipital cortices indicates that VSTM capacity is determined both by a fixed number of objects and by object complexity.

Unique features of action potential initiation in cortical neurons

Article Abstract:

Quantitative analysis of the dynamics of action potential initiation in cortical neurons in vivo, in vitro and in computational methods is presented. A model based on the cooperative activation of sodium channels that reproduces the observed dynamics of action potential initiation is proposed.

Perceived luminance depends on temporal context

Article Abstract:

A novel illusion in which temporal relationships affect brightness perception is reported. The temporal context indicates two parallel streams, one adapting and another non-adapting, which encodes brightness in the visual cortex.
