Diversity suppresses growth

Article Abstract:

Conventional theories of crystal formation are called into question by new research based on a simulation of colloids. It was predicted that if the range of sizes of the hard colloidal particles in suspension is sufficiently large, the mixture will be genuinely amorphous, thus not being able to create even very small crystals. It is also predicted that a minimum nucleation rate will influence the characteristic size of the microcrystals that eventually arise following completion of the phase transition.

Quasi-planar nucleus structure in apoferritin crystallization

Article Abstract:

Research describing cluster formation in the crystallization of the quasi-spherical protein apoferritin is presented. Near-critical-size clusters containing 20-50 molecules are found to consist of planar arrays.

Catching crystals at birth

Article Abstract:

Research on the observation of the early stages of crystallization are very difficult to observe, but scientists have studied the growth of large protein crystals.
