Dominance of mineral dust in aerosol light-scattering in the North Atlantic trade winds

Article Abstract:

The light-scattering properties of the North African dust brought to Barbados by the North Atlantic trade winds indicates a high concentration of mineral dust. Mineral dust, whose emission rates are increasing, is an important aerosol component of the atmosphere. The dust scatters light almost four times more than the non-seasalt sulphate aerosols. The radiative influences of the dust affect climatic processes as a decrease in rainfall in the sub-Saharan region is related to high concentrations of mineral dust.
