Dynamical evolution of ecosystems

Article Abstract:

An analytical model is described that allows the detection of the characteristic timescales of evolving tropical forests and the evaluation of the consequences of anthropogenic process. The model has given a good description of the large quantity of data collected in Barro Colorado Island in Panama in the period 1990-2000 with just three ecologically relevant parameters and has predicted the dynamics of extinction of the existing species.

Density dependence explains tree species abundance and diversity in tropical forests

Article Abstract:

The fits of the dispersal is compared and the density dependence mechanisms for empirical RSA data on tree species in six New and Old World tropical forests show that both mechanisms offer sufficient and independent explanations and the RSA data cannot suggest to discriminate among the explanations of RSA patterns. Thus ecologists have to explain the high levels of tree diversity that occur in tropical forests.
