EMBO panel gives biology in Finland a pat on the back...

Article Abstract:

A study by the European Molecular Biology Organization shows that molecular biology and biotechnology research are progressing well in Finland. Most of the success is attributed to the establishment of a multidisciplinary centers-of-excellence program. However, the study argues that Finland still has to develop expertise in bioinformatics and structural biology. It adds that Finish scientists are subjected to too many evaluations, graduate students are too many, postdoctoral positions are scarce and training is too long.

Germany aims for younger professors

Article Abstract:

The Germany University Rectors' Conference (HRK) is aiming to establish short-term 'qualification professorships' in an effort to lower the age for tenured professors, and as an alternative to the Habilitation system. Qualification professorships would provide alternative career paths more in line with international procedures, according to the HRK research committee report.
