ESA seeks to pick up the pieces from Cluster mission's fiery fate

Article Abstract:

European Space Agency (ESA) officials are planning ways to salvage the Cluster space science project that was destroyed when its launch vehicle exploded in June 1996. ESA's space science directorate has started preparing an inventory of the remaining facilities available to Cluster. The mission cannot be completely replaced due to financial constraints, but other ESA projects can be delayed to accomodate Cluster. ESA will probably put a satellite into orbit along with those of the Interagency Solar Terrestrial Programme to reproduce Cluster's three-dimensional resolving property.

ESA agrees full re-fly for Cluster mission

Article Abstract:

The European Space Agency has announced its decision to relaunch each of four satellites from the failed Cluster mission of 1996. The Cluster programme will take three-dimensional measurements of solar wind and earth magnetosphere forces in the year 2001. However, the project will not be able to carry out other work in coordination with space satellites currently in orbit.
