Reduced predation of artificial nests in border-edge cuts on woodlots

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the differing levels of predation of birds' nests in clearcut forest edges and in shrub-edged forest. The high predation rates recorded at clearcut forest edges are discussed.

Effect of border-edge cuts on birds at woodlot edges in Southwestern Pennsylvania

Article Abstract:

The hypotheses that bird populations in border-edge cuts versus uncut edges have greater abundance and species richness and greater nest success were tested to determine the effect of increased shrub growth in border-edge cuts on edge-nesting birds in southwestern Pennsylvania. Bird populations were greater in border-edge cuts than in uncut edges. Border-edge cuts supported more shrub- and edge-nesting species, while uncut edges contained more woodland species.
