Effect of forest fragmentation on Lyme disease risk

Article Abstract:

The hypothesis that a reduced species diversity and high mouse density in small fragments is a potential consequence of increase in human exposure to Lyme disease caused by blacklegged ticks feeding on white-footed mouse is tested. The results suggest that by influencing the community composition of vertebrate hosts for disease-bearing vectors, habitat fragmentation can influence human health.

Biodiversity and disease risk: the case of Lyme disease

Article Abstract:

A conceptual model of how high species richness in communities of terrestrial vertebrates reduces exposure to Lyme disease is presented. Analyses have demonstrated significant negative correlations between species richness and terrestrial small mammals.

Fine-Scale Diversity and Rarity Hotspots in Northern Forests

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that species' limited spatial overlap produces a significant constraint on the efficiency of hotspot fine-scale conservation strategies. Data were drawn from studies of forest plants in Norway.
