Effects of economic prosperity on numbers of threatened species

Article Abstract:

The link between the numbers of threatened species and per capita gross national product using data from more that 100 countries is presented. Increased prosperity results in improved protection for certain threatened bird species and it is to be studied why such a relationship is applicable only on bird species and not to other species. The analysis suggests that each country's wealth affects the environmental quality of the country but concern for endangered species within a country may arise from other countries, prompting investment in species protection by direct transfer or by indirect means.

Weitzman's approach and conservation of breed diversity: an application to African cattle breeds

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that the optimal conservation strategy for African cattle breeds under a limited funding scheme is to prioritize the breeds with the greatest marginal diversity instead of those which are most endangered. The findings were achieved using both genetic and nongenetic factors and applied to taurine, sanga, zebu, and zenga cattle breeds.

Modeling Opportunity Costs of Conservation in Transitional Landscapes

Article Abstract:

Land value estimates are assessed as alternate land use opportunity costs, and are incorporated into a model applied to agricultural conversion landscapes in Paraguay. Forest conservation costs are then derived from the model.
