Elk movement in response to early-season hunting in northwest Colorado

Article Abstract:

Research shows that habitat is a factor in determining elk behavioral response to early-season hunting. Studies on elk populations in Colorado's White River area showed that the commencement of the archery season created a timing shift in elk movement in the northern region, but did not create a corresponding shift in the southern region, indicating that migration and topographical differences play a role.

Effects of archery hunter numbers and opening dates on elk movement

Article Abstract:

Research on elk hunting in Colorado indicates that elk move onto private lands in response to the launch of hunting season. Elk movement onto private lands was slowed more significantly by delaying opening day for hunting than decreasing the number of hunters.

Effects of fall hunting on survival of male wild Turkeys in Virginia and West Virginia

Article Abstract:

The dual study conducted by the Virginia department of game and inland fisheries and the West Virginia division of natural resources focused on estimating the survival and band-reporting rates determine the relationship of fall hunting and male turkey survival. The results reported higher band-recovery in the adult turkeys in the winter-summer, while the differences in band-recovery in the age classes was minimal.
