Electrons are not ambidextrous

Article Abstract:

Researchers on experiment E158 at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in California announced that in contrast to bullets, the probability of an electron hitting a target depends slightly on whether its spin is right- or left-handed. The E158 experiment used the two-mile linear accelerator at SLAC-currently the world's highest-energy electron accelerator-to accelerate left- and right-handed electrons separately to about 50 GeV and scatter them off other electron in a liquid-hydrogen target.

A finer constant

Article Abstract:

The fine-structure constant alpha is used to measure the strength of electromagnetism, and the accuracy of its determination depends on the accurate examination of various phenomena like photon collision with rubidium atoms and the quantum Hall effect. Experiments are conducted to measure alpha in an improved manner, using muon, similar to the electron, whose alpha-dependent deviation, g-2, is measured as the most precisely calculated quantity.

Electrons hang ten on laser wake

Article Abstract:

Electrons can be accelerated by making them surf a laser-driven plasma wave. High acceleration rates and the production of well-populated high-quality beams signal the potential of this table-top technology.
