Embryology of vestimentiferan tube worms from deep-sea methane/sulphide seeps

Article Abstract:

Early vestimentiferan embryology studies reveal similarities to oviparous polychaetes though vestimentiferans are considered close relatives of the periviate Pogonophora. Characteristics such as egg size, the presence of two polar lobes and a trochophore-like larva are similar. Eggs of vestimentiferans are buoyant and optically dense. Embryos and larvae float into the water column and disperse as lecithotrophs for many weeks. The dispersal capacity of seep vestimentiferans is very high.

Developmental arrest in vent worm embryos

Article Abstract:

The temperature range needed by the developing thermophilic worm embryo is very different from that required by adults. It has been established that early embryos may disperse through cold abyssal water in a condition of developmental arrest. Development is only finished when warmer water is reached.

Larval dispersal potential of the tubeworm Riftia pachyptila at deep-sea hydrothermal vents

Article Abstract:

Research into the larval dispersal of hydrothermal vent organisms is described. Analysing the dispersal potential of larvae of the giant tubeworm Riftia pachyptila suggests that the dispersal distance is limited by cross-axis flow and by temporary reversals in along-axis flows.
