Essential function of LIF receptor in motor neurons

Article Abstract:

A ligand for the leukemia inhibitory factor receptor subunit (LIF-R) is necessary for the proper development of motor neurons in brainstem nuclei and the spinal cord. Neurotrophic cytokines play an important role in the development and maintenance of the nervous system in mammals. Cytokines such as ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) and LIF affect the maintenance of the motor neurons but mice without LIF and CNTF can survive. Mice without LIF-R, however, die soon after birth.

More on motor neurons

Article Abstract:

Loss of phrenic nerve motor axons in mice causes early death, and reflects progressive degeneration in the progressive motor neuropathy (pmn) mutant. The pathological manifestations of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are similar to those of mice bearing the pmn mutant. Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) promotes regeneration of axons and so might be used in the treatment of ALS.

BDNF controls dopamine D3 receptor expression and triggers behavioural sensitization

Article Abstract:

Research into the role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is described. It is shown that BDNF is not merely responsible for the spread and survival of neurons, but also controls the expression of the dopamine receptor D3. It also influences behavioural sensitization.
