'Euro-lab' scientists seek fairer deal on pay

Article Abstract:

The scientists of the European international laboratories have decided to approach the International Labour Organization to express their grievances that their salaries do not match the salary structure for international organization staff. Efforts are made by the government to restrict the high pay offered by the organizations so that a balance exists between such organizations and national research bodies. The organizations such as the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, European Southern Observatory and the European Laboratory for Particle Physics are seeking a compromise with the Coordinated Organizations.

ESA plans put solar science out of orbit

Article Abstract:

The European Space Agency has revised its long-term space science program known as Horizons 2000 due to expected budget cuts. Aside from the indefinite postponement of the planned mission to Mercury, the revamp is likely to entail a reduction in the involvement of European scientists in the planned international expeditions to Mars and the Next Generation Space Telescope. Some scientists believe that the restructuring of the 20-year Horizons plan will undermine European space science.

Decision time for Europe's hot rock project

Article Abstract:

Economic viability stands in the way of the European Hot Dry Rock project at Soultz-sours-Forets in France. The decision made in Dec 1995 will reflect the future of geothermal energy research in Europe. The UK administration is skeptical about the cost-effectiveness of the project, which caused them to abandon a similar project at Cornwall earlier. However, European Commission officials are hopeful that the project will be approved for the benefit of geothermal energy research.
