Evidence for heterogeneous reactions in the Antarctic autumn stratosphere

Article Abstract:

Ozone loss over the Antarctic may take place in autumn before the stratospheric temperature drops sufficiently for the formation of polar stratospheric clouds. Nitrogen dioxide in its active form NO2 binds with reactive chlorine compounds rendering them inactive and unable to effect ozone depletion. However, NO2 was observed to be changed into the inactive HNO3 reservoir species in the autumn of 1991. Heterogeneous chemistry on background aerosols explains the conversion of the active to inactive forms and the increased potential for ozone depletion.

What cannot be said in science

Article Abstract:

Scientists worldwide are generally reluctant to give their views on any other areas of scientific research apart from their own. They leave to oftentimes ill-informed and unqualified people the task of explaining scientific theories to the public. Scientists must be able to paint an urgent vision of science in its totality to the public in order to consistently obtain cultural, political and financial support for the field.
