Evidence of power-law flow in the Mojave desert mantle

Article Abstract:

A power-law model of viscous flow in the mantle with n=3.5 successfully explains the spatial and temporal evolution of transient surface deformation following the 1992 Landers and 1999 Hector Mine earthquakes in southern California. The findings support the contention that at least beneath the Mojave desert, the upper mantle is weaker than the lower crust.

Delayed triggering of the 1999 Hector Mine earthquake by viscoelastic stress transfer

Article Abstract:

Research examining the Hector Mine earthquake in 1999 in California, United States, is presented. It is emphasized that the delayed stress transfer took place. The use of viscoelastic parameters demonstrates that upper-mantle flows cause increases in post-seismic stresses.
