Excited-state enhancement of optical nonlinearities in linear conjugated molecules

Article Abstract:

Linear conjugated molecules can be converted to a state of optical nonlinearity by optically exciting the molecules at one wavelength so that the optical susceptibility value can be improved by more than two orders of magnitude without raising optical absorption at the probe wavelength. The molecules can thus be rendered usable for all-optical applications such as optically bistable switches and nonlinear directional couplers.

A gigantic fossil arthropod trackway

Article Abstract:

A unique complex trackway is discovered in Scotland and it is the largest terrestrial trackway of a walking anthropod and also the first record of locomotion on land for a species of Hibbertopterus. The trackway is comparable in size to the largest known hibbertopteroid body fossils and the larger known invertebrate trackway is different in character and appears to have been made by a swimming animal.
