Factors affecting the spatial distribution of San Joaquin kit foxes

Article Abstract:

An understanding of the factors affecting the distribution of animal populations is important for conservation management, especially of endangered species such as the San Joaquin kit foxes. A new study investigates the spatial distribution of kit foxes in the Naval Petroleum Reserves, CA, to determine if it varied with respect to habitat and biological variables. It was found that the only consistent factor affecting kit fox spatial distribution was topographic ruggedness, but prey abundance and predator density were important underlying factors.

Effects of radiocollars on San Joaquin kit foxes

Article Abstract:

The behavior of free-ranging animals is often investigated using radiotelemetry and it is widely assumed that animals fitted with transmitters do not significantly alter their behaviour and remain fit. A new study investigates the effects of radiocollars on San Joaquin kit foxes in the Naval Petroleum Reserves, CA., to discover whether physical condition, reproduction and survival are reduced. The study shows that survival rates for juvenile kit foxes are diminished and they may require a post-collar acclimation period.

Effects of habitat on competition between kit foxes and coyotes

Article Abstract:

San Joaquin kit foxes are endangered due to profound habitat loss from coyotes that exhibit both interference and exploitation competition with kit foxes through intraguild predation and overlapping prey use.
