Factors influencing efficiency of white-tailed deer harvest in Illinois

Article Abstract:

Management of white-tailed deer populations is currently focused on population stability and reduction, primarily through recreational harvesting. A new study designed to assess the factors influencing deer vulnerability to harvest is presented. The study shows that deer harvest susceptibility is higher in areas where the forest cover is fragmented and in sparsely populated areas. Details of the study are presented.

Denning chronology and design of effective bear management units

Article Abstract:

A study assessing whether denning chronology warrants consideration in designation of bear management units is illustrated. It was hypothesized that earlier entrance and later emergence by females would result in lower vulnerability of females to harvest.

Scale of management for mature male white-tailed deer as influenced by home range and movements

Article Abstract:

A study to determine home range size of mature male white-tailed deer and develop a model to find out the scale at which management for male white-tailed deer will be effective was conducted. Results show that the movements after dispersal were minimal.
