Fading pan-European visions?: Making the most of European collaboration would seem to be sensible as pressures on research budgets intensify

Article Abstract:

At the time of the Treaty of Rome the main focus of attention was on technology based research projects in the fields of aerospace, space and nuclear. Science was not on the agenda, but a new entrant to European science politics is the European Parliament, which could have a major influence on scientific policy. The European Science Foundation (ESF) could pursue a pan-European agenda, but it is only a small group of people and needs to build a formal role.
