Tree stem diameters fluctuate with tide

Article Abstract:

There is a strong link between the rhythmic fluctuations in the diameter of tree stems growing under open and controlled conditions and the timing and strength of tides. It appears that the Moon is having an impact on the flow of water between different parts of the trees. A comparison of several extensometric curves with the inverse values of the calculated gravimetric curves for the location of the trees showed a systematic correlation, although there was a phase shift in one case. A rhythmic, active and reversible flow could be involved from the symplast to the apoplast.

Oak tree mortality in Iberia

Article Abstract:

The cork oak tree varieties Quercus suber and Q. ilex are suffering widespread population decline in southwest Spain and other parts of the Mediterranean. Symptoms of individual trees and their geographic distribution suggest one cause is the water- and soil-borne fungus Phytophthora. This fungus is exotic, and the damage it is causing illustrates the danger posed to forest systems by increasing intercontinental trade. Global warming could contribute to this particular pathogen's impact.
