Familial dementia caused by polymerization of mutant neuroserpin

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to identify evidence for a molecular mechanism for familial encephalopathy with neuroserpin inclusion bodies (FENIB), an autosomal dominantly inherited dementia. This research implies that inhibitors of protein polymerization could be effective treatments for this condition and possibly for other less rare neurodegenerative diseases. It was established that FENIB is in alignment with the general pattern of neurodegeneration resulting from aberrant protein processing and tissue deposition.

Structure of the C-terminal domain of FliG, a component of the rotor in the bacterial flagellar motor

Article Abstract:

Many motile bacterial are propelled by flagella turned by rotary motors in the cell membrane, which are powered by the transmembrane gradient of protons or sodium ions. Only three proteins, MotA, MotB and FliG are closely involved in torque generation. FliG is present in around 25 copies per flagellum. The crystal structure of FliG-C from the hyperthemophilic eubacterium Thermotoga maritima is presented.

Image reconstructions of helical assemblies of the HIV-1 CA protein

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the image reconstructions of CA tubes from six helical families which have been prepared through the use of electron cryo-microscopy techniques. Hexameric rings are found in all tubes.
