Facultative sex ratio adjustment by western bluebird mothers with stay-at-home helpers-at-the-nest

Article Abstract:

The hypothesis that nonbreeding, stay-at-home helpers indicate poor breeding prospects for locally competing sons is tested and an investigation on one prediction of this hypothesis that such helpers indicate a tendency for parents to produce substandard sons is presented. Experiments indicated that the ability of male western bluebirds to breed is constrained primarily by the availability of breeding females rather than the availability of space or seasonal constraints on independent breeding.

Male detention affects extra-pair copulation frequency and pair behaviour in western bluebirds

Article Abstract:

The hypothesis that male bluebirds (Silia mexicana) prevent extra-pair copulations by guarding their mates was tested using 1-h detention experiments. Male detention increased the frequency of extra-pair copulations in western bluebirds but resulted in selective participation of the females in extra-pair matings. It was found that extra-pair copulations were not influenced by male existence, quality of extra-pair male's territory or phenotypic characteristics of the extra-pair male relative to those of the females should be considered.
