Fantastic plastic

Article Abstract:

Conjugated polymers, one class of plastics, are interesting materials with the unique combination of semiconducting properties and scope for simple fabrication and shaping. A major breakthrough in the development of semi conducting polymers is the discovery that when a voltage is applied to a thin layer of one of these materials, light can be emitted.

Chiral metal complexes with large octupolar optical nonlinearities

Article Abstract:

The hyperpolarizibility values, which are significant in determining the characteristics of optically nonlinear organic materials, can be varied by the selection of ligands in the constituent material. These optical materials in which the hyperpolarizibility is enhanced can be used in telecommunication and optical signal processing applications.

A bug-beating diode

Article Abstract:

The potentially revolutionary production of UVC light using semiconductor light-emitting diodes (LED) based on aluminum nitride, which could be powered by low-voltage solar cells, is discussed. It is found that the wavelength of light emitted from a semiconductor LED is nearly the same as that of the light that it absorbs.
