Toxoplasma co-opts host gene expression by injection of a polymorphic kinase homologue

Article Abstract:

The genetic crosses between type II and III lines were used to show the strain-specific differences of Toxoplasma gondii, an obligate intracellular parasite in the modulation of host cell transcription that are mediated by a putative protein kinase, ROP16. Findings provide a new mechanism for how an intracellular eukaryotic pathogen can interact with its host and reveal important differences in how different Toxoplasma lineages have evolved to exploit the interaction.

An autonomous molecular computer for logical control of gene expression

Article Abstract:

Simple molecular-scale autonomous programmable computers were demonstrated allowing both input and output information, these computers were introduced to control the over and under expression of genes. A robust and flexible molecular computer capable of logical analysis of messenger RNA, mRNA, disease indicators in vitro are demonstrated.

R gene expression induced by a type-III effector triggers disease resistance in rice

Article Abstract:

A report on the cloning of the R gene Xa27 from rice and the cognate avr gene avrXa27 from Xanthomonas oryzae pv is presented. Induction of Xa27 occurs only in the immediate vicinity of infected tissue, whereas ectopic expression of Xa27 resulted in resistance to otherwise compatible strains of the pathogen.
