Fears rise over BSE infection in UK abattoirs

Article Abstract:

The extremely resilient nature of prion proteins could be hampering the UK government's efforts to ensure that bovine spongiform encephalophathy does not enter the human food chain, according to a report from the Royal Society and the Academy of Medical Sciences. There is a risk that meat for human consumption could become infected with prion proteins.

Chemistry prize reflects tailor-made reactions

Article Abstract:

Half of the 2001 Nobel prize for chemistry has been won by K. Barry Sharpless of the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA, for his research into oxidation reactions. The other half has gone to William Knowles, formerly with Monsanto, and Ryoji Noyori of Nagoya University, Japan. This recognizes their work on hydrogenation reactions.

Royal Society disputes value of carbon sinks

Article Abstract:

A report by Britain's Royal Society challenges the idea that carbon sinks of forest can remove sufficient carbon dioxide for industrial nations to meet their emissions targets. The report concludes that this strategy will only have short term effects.
