Female control of copulations to maximize male help: a comparison of polygynandrous alpine accentors, Prunella collaris, and dunnocks, P. Modularis
Article Abstract:
The breeding behavior of alpine accentors and dunnocks in polygynandrous groups were studied. In both species, breeding habits in groupings where two or more unrelated males shared two or more females showed unusually high rates of female solicitation and copulating, as well as high rejection rates of female solicitations. Results imply that the female and alpha male of both species use a series of ploys in an attempt to manipulate the behavior of the other. Sexual conflict over the control of copulation is likely to be widespread in birds.

Ecological causes and reproductive conflicts
Article Abstract:
A study of alpine accentors on the mountains of the French Pyrenees revealed that alpha males and one to three juvenile subordinate males formed polygynandrous groups in mating and collectively raising broods of one or more females. Grouping of males is attributed to ecological reasons which force them to cluster in sites with good food resources.

Multiple paternity and parental effort
Article Abstract:
A study of the mating system of the alpine accentor revealed that females chose alpha males for copulation to benefit from their enhanced protection of offspring from predation risk. However, both alpha and beta males displayed similarities in feeding their nestlings and their paternity share was directly correlated to their share of the matings.
