Female song sparrow, Melospiza melodia, response to simulated conspecific and heterospecific intrusion across three seasons

Article Abstract:

Female song sparrows were presented with simulated female song sparrow intrusion or a simulates spotted towhee intrusion, to determine female responses to territorial intrusion. It is indicated that female responses were either directed aggressively towards the intruder, directed towards the mate or no response to the intruder.

Song repertoire size predicts initial mating success in male song sparrows, Melospiza melodia

Article Abstract:

Long-term data from free-living song sparrows inhabiting Mandarte Island, British Columbia, Canada are used to investigate whether male song repertoire size predicted three components of reproductive performance during the first year. Across males whose song was recorded, males with larger repertoires were not more likely to acquire a territory or to settle sooner.

Partial song matching in an eastern population of song sparrows, Melospiza melodia

Article Abstract:

A study was carried out to determine whether song sparrow males in an eastern population, where whole song sharing is rare, are capable of using partial song matching using songs with shared introductions. The findings suggest that males that performed a partial match to a hybrid song approached the speaker more closely than male that did not match, being consistent with the hypothesis that partial matching is a directed signal of aggression.
