Feminizing turtle embryos as a conservation tool

Article Abstract:

Manipulation of sex ratios by feminizing turtle embryos is not recommended as a conservation strategy for endangered turtles. Estrogenic treatment of embryos can cause thin gonads, while exogenous application of estrogens could also affect the Mullerian ducts. With either process, adult females are not able to discharge eggs from oviducts. Imposing a female-biased sex ratio could also have a long-term effect of masculinizing alleles. The sex ratio would become male-biased after the manipulation ended.

Conservation scientists and the policy process

Article Abstract:

Conservation scientists are obligated to participate in helping form conservation policy. The process is frustratingly slow, illogical, and full of opportunities to fail; yet without the knowledge gathered by conservation science, will produce little of use. Earlier models of scientists as staid observers are no longer relevant. The interface between science and society is the most important area for scientists to explore.

Interactive keys, inventory, and conservation

Article Abstract:

Computerized interactive keys can aid in the identification of plants for conservation programs and studies. The interactive key allows characters to be applied in any order, and they are easily updated, dynamic, and affordable. An interactive key for tree genera of Borneo has been constructed and posted on the World Wide Web.
