The surest way to God

Article Abstract:

Physicist John Polkinghorne points to physicist Paul Davies' remark that science offers a surer way to God than religion to support his view that natural theology is enjoying a revival among scientists. The World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) implicitly acknowledged the widespread belief that neither science nor politics can provide all the answers to the world's 'big' problems when it called upon the world's great religions in 1986 to declare their attitudes to nature. The WWF's initiative reflected a growing awareness that dealing effectively with environmental problems requires religion.

Ferroelectric ice

Article Abstract:

Recent papers have revived the debate about whether ferroelectric ice exists, and the implications for understanding condensed matter. Definite experimental evidence has been reported that partial ferroelectric alignment can be induced by normal ice. It is accepted that water molecules of hexagonal ice below around 160 K, settle into a random pattern. Su and colleagues have shown that surface interactions can make ice ferroelectric.
