Funding assured for international malaria sequencing project

Article Abstract:

The Wellcome Trust is to invest 8 million pounds sterling in an international project to sequence the Plasmodium falciparum genome, a deadly malaria parasite. The sequencing work will be undertaken at the US Institute for Genome Research and at Wellcome's Sanger Centre in the UK. a further $8 million will be invested by the US Department of Defense, with $2.5 million coming from the Burroughs Wellcome fund. The parasite is becoming resistant to available drugs and the genome project will help to discover new targets for drugs.

'Finishing' success marks major genome sequencing milestone..

Article Abstract:

The complete sequence of chromosome 22 is a milestone for the publicly funded international human genome consortium. Finishing will take as much time and effort as the raw sequencing, and will involve joining up raw DNA data to form contigs, fixing sequence errors, and filling in gaps between contigs.
