NASA ponders "faster, cheaper" way to send scientific mission to Pluto

Article Abstract:

NASA may propose an unmanned space flight to Pluto. NASA's new administrator, Daniel Goldin, has endorsed the idea of two 150-kilogram spacecrafts that would traverse the 5 billion kilometers between Earth and Pluto in seven or eight years. The mission, called the Pluto Fast Fly-by, will use recent progress in miniaturization to combine observational capability, small size and great speed. NASA is likely to request funding for the mission in its FY 1993 budget, with Feb 1998 being the initial target-date for launching the first spacecraft.
