Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly widely recognized that restoring the habitat of one endangered species may have a negative impact on the survival chances of another endangered species. This is the case in South Florida, where reflooding some newly drained areas of the Everglades marsh would create valuable habitat for snail kites, wood storks and other endangered or listed species but have a negative impact on the Florida panther. The Multi-Species Recovery plan for South Florida aims to ensure that a healthy ecosystem is created in the region, involving many different agencies.

NMFS steers marine issues at COP10

Article Abstract:

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, or CITES, is a treaty designed to conserve species that are likely candidates for over-exploitation due to international trade. CITES maintains Appendices of threatened marine species. At the 1998 Conference of Parties of CITES, several issues referring to marine subjects were resolved, including Japan and Norway's proposals for the downlisting of specific whale stocks from CITES Appendix I to II, and Cuba's recommendation to downlist hawksbill turtles found in Cuba from Appendix I to II.
