Foresight wins bouquets and brickbats from watchdog

Article Abstract:

The Technology Foresight program initiated by Britain for implementing the important directives of the white paper on science and technology has come under both praise and criticism by an all-party British parliamentary committee. The committee lauds the conception and implementation of the first phase of the program but has reservations about the next important stage of the program which involves practical application of the findings of the first phase.

Britain wins bid to host ocean drilling office

Article Abstract:

The scientific planning office of the ocean drilling program (ODP) will be hosted by the University of Wales, Cardiff, and the Natural Environment Research Council. The ODP is an internationally funded project administered by the US National Science Foundation. The scientific agenda for ODP is set through the Joint Oceanographic Institutions Deep Earth Sampling (JOIDES) office which will be located in Cardiff for two years beginning in 1995.

Internal fight threatens future of Strangeways laboratory in Britain

Article Abstract:

Staffers and trustees of the Strangeways laboratory in the UK are involved in a dispute over the laboratory's research base. The trustees have proposed to extend their scope to inflammation research and establish closer ties with the University of Cambridge. The scientific staff, most of whom will be displaced by the plan, considers this as a threat to the laboratory's independence.
