Forgotten plights

Article Abstract:

Many learned societies such as the American Physical Society, American Chemical Society, and several scientific academies have human-rights committees that play an active role in defending individuals at risk. All scientists could contribute, by making themselves aware of existing cases of human-rights abuses and by lending their support to campaigns against them.

Nobels in dubious causes

Article Abstract:

Scientists should try to select their area of activism carefully and campaign for worthy causes. Nobel laureates have an added responsibility, as they are highly regarded and are prominent scientists playing crucial roles in major world decisions.
