Future of energy labs under further scrutiny

Article Abstract:

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has recommenced reviews of its network of laboratories with the aim of streamlining them only after the Nov. 1996 elections. The preliminary plan that has been formulated does not meet the specifications of the strategic plan. Four reviews are slated to examine the DOE's choice of research locations, aspects of privatization, the strategic plans of nine large laboratories and peer review. The review process is expected to be implemented only if the Republicans win the congressional elections.

'Science Wars' blamed for loss of post

Article Abstract:

The Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, NJ, has seen director Phillip Griffiths block the appointment of historian of science Norton Wise to a faculty position. This has prompted social scientists at the institution to abandon attempts to develop research work in 'science studies.' They have clashed bitterly with natural scientists at the institute, who are claimed to be opposed to science studies as an academic discipline. Some observers believe that deliberate efforts were made to obtain negative views about Wise.

On the brink

Article Abstract:

Bonny Island, an oil-rich region in west Africa, hosting the largest-ever industrial investment is on the brink of an AIDS explosion due to a combination of migration, fast money and rampant prostitution caused by Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) employing workers from all over the world to work with impoverished workers. This has led the NLNG to come up with a project called Ibani-se that will seek to pull together industry and government money to support the control of AIDS.
