GABA in the mammalian suprachiasmatic nucleus and its role in diurnal rhythmicity

Article Abstract:

GABA acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter at night, reducing firing frequency, while during the day its role is that of an excitatory neurotransmitter, boosting firing frequency. GABAa receptors control the dual effect of GABA. It appears that the intracellular chloride concentration in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus is subject to diurnal oscillations. Furthermore, the intracellular ion composition may be a functional and modifiable physiological factor which determines the excitability of the nervous system.

George Wald (1906-97)

Article Abstract:

Biologist George Wald first came into contact with visual physiology through graduate work with Selig Hecht at Columbia University. After completing graduate work, he studied in Europe with three Nobel laureates, and in 1933 identified vitamin A in the retina. His first academic position was as tutor in biochemical sciences at Harvard, and he was to remain at this institution throughout his academic career. When he retired in 1977, he was Higgins Professor of Biology.
