GABA receptors, granule cells and genes

Article Abstract:

Identification of a gene mutation in an alcohol-intolerant (ANT) rat may improve understanding of alcohol's physiological effect. The mutation, discovered by Esa R. Korpi and colleagues, consists of one amino-acid alteration in one subunit of a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor. ANT rats have a heightened susceptibility to alcohol possibly because the mutation leads to benzodiazepine-related motor impairment and abnormal reaction to GABA receptors.

Synaptic activity at calcium-permeable AMPA receptors induces a switch in receptor subtype

Article Abstract:

It appears that synaptic activity can directly influence the subunit composition of a synaptic alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid receptor by controlling the expression or targeting of edited subunits. This mechanism provides a form of plasticity that is self-regulating.
