Reducing vortex density in superconductors using the 'ratchet effect'

Article Abstract:

Trapped magnetic flux is a serious obstacle to the application of low and high temperature superconductor devices. Flux lines or vortices dissipate energy and generate internal noise. Pinning of vortices by incorporating impurities and defects, is a method of overcoming the problem. A more desirable method would be to remove the vortices. By applying an alternating current to a superconductor patterned with an asymmetric pinning potential, vortex motion with direction determined by the asymmetry of the pattern can be induced. This ratchet effect can be used to remove vortices from superconductors.

Large low-field magnetoresistance in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 induced by artificial grain boundaries

Article Abstract:

The effects of structural defects in colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) materials on the CMR behavior of the compound La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 are examined. The role of artificial grain boundaries are observed using thin film devices. Results show that resistance switching occurs in magnetic field orders with low magnitude. In addition, the CMR effect can be used to develop sub-micrometer magnetic field sensors.
