Current-induced organization of vortex motion in type-II superconductors

Article Abstract:

Vortex-lattice dynamics in type-II superconductors, wherein the barriers to vortex motion at sample surfaces also play an important role, are examined. An investigation of clean, detwinned YBa(sub 2)Cu(sub 3)O(sub 7-delta) crystals at temperatures around 80-90K show an interplay between surface pinning and weak bulk pinning which results in the formation of a defect superstructure in the vortex lattice. A new kind of vortex dynamics is shown by the current-induced organization.

A pavement of pearl: Biomineralization

Article Abstract:

Molluscs form their shells from calcium carbonate and a complex of biological macromolecules. Such composites are envied and admired by materials scientists. New research, using microscopic techniques, shows how nacre, a common shell material, grows. The pores in the matrix sheets enable the crystals to grow and keep them aligned. Schaffer and colleagues used a new scanning ion conductance microscopy technique

Two coexisting vortex phases in the peak effect regime in a superconductor

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the use of a scanning a.c. Hall microscope to reveal the two distinct vortex-matter phases displaying different pinning strengths which coexist within the vortex phase of a type-II superconductor.
