Galileo at Jupiter - meetings with remarkable moons

Article Abstract:

The Galileo space vehicle has established some exciting facts about the four moons of the planet Jupiter. The spacecraft has established new information about the gravity and magnetic-field of the moons Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. Each of the moons has a metallic inner core and silicate outer core. Satellite pictures illustrating the surface of each moon are given.

Constant illumination at the lunar north pole

Article Abstract:

A quantitative illumination map of the north pole of the Moon was made with the help of the images sent by the spacecraft Clementine. This map helps astronauts to identify areas that are constantly illuminated on the moon's surface, during a lunar day in summer.

Flooding of Ganymede's bright terrains by low-viscosity water-ice lavas

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the involvement of tectonic deformations and volcanic eruptions in the formation of relatively new ice sheets on Jupiter's moon Ganymede. Images from Galileo and Voyager are discussed.
