Genetics takes off in Naples as institute moves south

Article Abstract:

The Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine, a key Italian genetic research institute, will move from Milan, Italy, to an Integrated Centre for Biological Research being created in Naples, Italy, by CNR, the Italian research council. CNR's International Institute of Genetics and Biophysics will also be located at the new centre. The Telethon Institute will receive initial financial assistance from the CNR, while the Campagna region, in which Naples is situated, will supply additional funding for running the Telethon Institute during its first three years in Naples.

German institute renews east-west unease

Article Abstract:

The relocation of the German Institute for Molecular Pharmacology (FMP) from eastern Berlin to the Max Delbruck Centre, Buch, in the western parts of the city is causing unease in the east-west relations. The FMP staff and the new director wholly endorse this location. However, the Free University, which wants to improve its standing by incorporating FMP, is against this move. Although the Berlin government was split in its choice due to concerns of finance and tradition, the federal government rejected the Free University's offer to host the institute.
