Genomic analysis of increased host immune and cell death responses induced by 1918 influenza virus

Article Abstract:

A comprehensive analysis of the global host response induced by the 1918 influenza virus indicates that mice infected with the reconstructed 1918 influenza virus displayed an increased and accelerated activation of host immune response genes associated with severe pulmonary pathology. It shows that the virulence of the 1918 influenza virus requires use of the fully reconstructed virus.

Structural basis for template-independant RNA polymerization

Article Abstract:

The mechanism by which the CCA-adding enzyme synthesizes the defined sequence without a nucleic acid template remains elusive. An experiment shows a structure that represents the 'pre-insertion' stage of selecting the incoming nucleotide and provides the structural basis for the mechanism underlying template-independent RNA polymerization.

Large-scale sequencing of human influenza reveals the dynamic nature of viral genome evolution

Article Abstract:

The results of sequencing 209 complete genomes of the human influenza A virus, encompassing a total of 2,821,103 nucleotides are presented. This large-scale sequencing effort promises to provide a more comprehensive picture of the evolution of influenza viruses and of their pattern of transmission through human and animal populations.
