George Colvin Humphrey, 1875-1947: a brief biography

Article Abstract:

Professor George Colvin Humphrey (1875-1947), is remembered for his contributions in the field of animal husbandry. His pioneering efforts to organize community breeding associations for livestock improvement met with remarkable success. Professor Humphrey taught at the Michigan State College and later joined the University of Wisconsin, as professor and Chairman of Animal Husbandry, in 1903. He provided active encouragement to inter-departmental research and extension services during his teaching career. He was elected the president of American Society of Animal Production, in 1933.

Glenn Wade Salisbury, 1910-1994: a brief biography

Article Abstract:

Scientist Glenn Wade Salisbury was noted for his accomplishments in the field of animal husbandry. Salisbury, who was born on June 2, 1910, in Sheffield, OH, pioneered the science of artificial breeding of cattle. His contributions include the use of egg yolk-citrate and antibacterial agents in the preservation of sperm and control of pathogens in semen. Salisbury received several awards including the American Dairy Science Assn.'s Borden Award in 1945. He died on Feb. 3, 1994.

William Earl Petersen, 1892-1971: a brief biography

Article Abstract:

William E. Petersen was a dairy scientist and he wrote numerous textbooks as well as more advanced publications on the subject matter. He served as a member of faculty of the University of Minnesota for 40 years. During that time, he lectured extensively in many countries. He was made a knight by the Danish royal family, which was but fitting as he was of Danish ancestry. He was also chosen to be part of the Royal Swedish Academy.
