Germany seeks limited European projects...

Article Abstract:

Germany has proposed restricting to a few member countries the European Commission's Framework funding of research in certain areas such as aeronautics. Germany's proposal is a part of its position paper on the Framework program to be implemented in 1998. It also proposes decreasing the number of applications and concentrating the funds. The proposal is unlikely to be accepted by countries that will be denied funding. Germany supports expansion of the task force that regulates research and research projects that increase cooperation with Central and Eastern European countries.

Brussels urged to back more basic science

Article Abstract:

The European Science and Technology Assembly (ESTA) urges the promotion of basic research in the European Commission's next five-year Framework program. This policy may allow researchers to define ways to achieve long-term industrial targets. The move will also enhance benefits from accidental discoveries. ESTA argues for inclusion of a basic research component in every program in Framework V and wants the commission to develop common objectives for national research councils and pan-European research bodies.
