Inter vivos and testamentary gifts for animal welfare often are stolen or misused. Donors must carefully plan to make sure that their money goes to their intended beneficiaries. Donors should retain a competent law firm to plan their estate that does not have a conflict of interest.

It is preferable for pets to stay at home rather than in a kennel or in other unfamiliar surroundings when their owners travel. Professional pet-sitting services can done in the owners' home. Kennel accomodations and staying at a hotel that allows pets are other alternatives.

Urban search and rescue dogs at the World Trade Center and Pentagon sites were invaluable in the aftermath of the tragedies. However, the dogs were subject to the same dehydration, smoke inhalation, and exhaustion experienced by human searchers.
