Gourmet macromolecules

Article Abstract:

The preparation of macromolecules that are almost identical to the natural products is now possible, using living polymerization methods. The method consists of addition of monomers to an initiator molecule that is stabilized. The formation of DNA polymers using photolithographic techniques and the supply of oligonucleotides in the market to compare sequences to prepare the exact duplicates are new methods that have been developed.

LImits to growth

Article Abstract:

The trick to controlling size and morphology down to the last atom, is to use precursor compounds, incorporating organic ligands that coat the cluster surface and inhibit nucleation of the bulk solid. Large inorganic clusters are not new and giant anions have been used as building blocks for higher order assemblies. Control of structure on even greater length scales is possible if it can be established how it is done in nature.
