Green plants in starling nests: Effects on nestlings

Article Abstract:

Research on the function of the green plants in starling nests has been undertaken in the US. The species of parasites and plants and their interactions may be different in Europe, so a study considered whether the herbs that male starlings use in their nests reduce ectoparasites in a nestbox colony close to Andechs in southern Germany. Ectoparasite loads in herb and control nests were indistinguishable although nestlings in herb nests weighed more and had higher haemotocrit levels.
