Terrain influences the accurate judgement of distance

Article Abstract:

Three-dimensional space is represented mathematically by cartesian, polar and other coordinate systems. Representation system choice in physical science is limited by the requirement to simplify a machine's computation whilst enhancing efficiency. It is questioned whether the brain 'selects' a most cost-efficient way of representing the three dimensional location of objects. Human psychophysical performance in perceiving absolute distance and visually directed action tasks was studied. Objects seen on continuous homogeneous texture ground surfaces enabled the observed to judge distance to the object correctly, but if surface information was unavailable, distance judgement was not so accurate.

Banned in the bighouse; with elimination of prison law libraries in Arizona, inmates must rely on paralegals to prepare petitions

Article Abstract:

The Arizona Department of Corrections no longer provides prison law libraries and instead has limited legal assistance for prisoners provided by paralegals. The new system came after Lewis v. Casey's overturning of an injunction requiring the state to provide inmates with well-stocked prison law libraries and its aims are to save money and reduce frivolous inmate litigation. The small number of paralegals inmates must rely on can help only with fact-based complaints in four "qualified" areas.
